JOBLESS people in Consett are being urged to consider setting up their own businesses as the route back to work.

The Consett South Enterprise Association wants to encourage individuals and groups in the area to think about community enterprises.

Community enterprises, such as community cafes, creches, child care services, furniture cooperatives and arts groups, are springing up in many areas.

The association hopes more ventures will be launched after it holds an enterprise development day, on Wednesday, May 2, at the Thornfield Road Community Centre, The Grove.

An association spokesman said: "Community enterprise is proving to be one of the fastest growing routes out of unemployment.

"The enterprise culture, which encourages individuals and groups to devise their own business idea, is enjoying increasing popularity throughout County Durham.

"The one-day event will bring together examples of successful practice, support structures and potential entrepreneurs in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Social enterprise is for the whole community.

This awareness-raising event will mark a significant point in the development of Consett South, in particular, as an area of self-help."

"The event is being held with the backing of the Durham Cooperative Development Association and is open to people of all ages.

A free creche and free transport are available. For details call the association, on (01207) 588550.
