A NEW programme of after-school activities in Shildon will benefit the community, says the local MP.
The National Lottery has given Shildon schools £76,995 from its New Opportunities fund so that children in three primary and one senior schools can enjoy a range of new experiences.
Bishop Auckland MP Derek Foster launched the programme at Sunnydale School yesterday.
He enjoyed a taste of outdoor life when he met students working towards their Duke of Edinburgh bronze awards.
He also toured classrooms and viewed an exhibition manned by pupils from Timothy Hackworth, Shildon county and St John's Church of England primary schools.
Mr Foster said: "The whole of the community must benefit from this work. The children benefit by getting a new sense of confidence and a greater awareness of what is going on around them."
