A WARNING has been issued by trading standards officials urging businesses not to fall for a donation con-trick.

The alert follows a call received by a Hartlepool businessman from a firm calling itself Drug Abuse Awareness Campaign, with the address of 78 Marylebone Road, London.

The caller said he wanted to remind the man of his promise, last November, of £140 towards the cost of publishing a booklet for schools on drug abuse awareness.

A spokesman for Hartlepool Borough Council said: "We want to ensure businesses do not fall for this trick. Not only will they lose money but genuine charities could also miss out on donations they might otherwise have received."
