STAFF at a car parts factory are learning new skills in their spare time.

Washington's Unipres is supporting 32 staff through courses ranging from information technology to Japanese working practices.

The initiative is backed by the Automotive Sector Strategic Alliance (assa) and delivered through assahub - a sector hub for the Government's lifelong learning initiative, learndirect.

Staff can learn online, at home or during their lunch hour.

Lyn Blake, Unipres human resources manager, said: "The flexible approach, using online training that can be accessed at a time and place to suit them, was attractive to staff and also the company."

Heather West, of assahub, said: "The reason this scheme works so well is because it takes learning to people in their own environment at a time convenient to them."
