SOME of Britain's best folk musicians will be in Durham City next month.

The Durham Gathering, which is in its sixth year, is one of the country's leading folk festivals and brings together established performers and local talent.

The event will take place from July 26 to 28 with the Folkworks Summer Schools starting on July 23.

Students will have an opportunity to work with leading musicians and then showcase their talent at a series of concerts during the festival.

The opening concert will take place on Thursday, July 26, at Elvet Methodist Church, with a line-up including John Kirkpatrick, Catriona Macdonald, Kathryn Tickell and Alyth McCormack.

Friday's events will include the Folkworks Summer Schools Showcase, featuring ensembles from the summer schools. On the Saturday, the Folk Picnic will take place in the grounds of the DLI Museum and Art Gallery.

In addition to the music, there is also now the traditional picnic competition.

Tickets are available from Folkworks, on 0191-222 1717.
