COUNCIL tenants across the borough of Stockton are being warned about canvassers claiming to be associated with the council or the government.

The callers are offering to get repair work carried out quickly, and have been asking tenants to sign a housing repair questionnaire, loan agreement and an insurance agreement to fund the cost of any legal action against the council, in the event of work not being carried out within a given time.

Neil Schneider, director of housing and contract services for Stockton Borough Council, said: "These canvassers do not have any links with either the government or the council and tenants should be wary of signing any forms.

"I am concerned that these canvassers are targeting some of the most vulnerable people in the borough, who are being asked to sign up to substantial loan and insurance agreements.

"Many have been left confused and concerned after a visit from the canvassers.

"We would always advise tenants to be vigilant before allowing any strangers into their homes, and I cannot stress strongly enough the importance of asking to see some form of identification."

Stockton council trading standards officers are investigating a number of complaints into the canvassers and anyone who is concerned about any documents they have signed can call the advice centre on (01642) 391180.
