A BED and breakfast's expansion plans have been backed by city councillors.
A two-storey extension providing eight beds at the Farnley Tower Hotel, The Avenue, Durham City, has been approved by the city council's development control committee.
The building, which has 12 bedrooms, used to be a residential home. Councillors gave permission for it to be converted to a bed and breakfast in 1998.
The planning application for the expansion attracted one objection from a resident concerned about the scale of the development, its effect on the area's residential character and the increased demand for parking that could be created.
The council's environment services corporate director, Neil Smith, said in a report that the plan would not be detrimental to the area.
"While the number of car parking spaces is not to be increased, the hotel has a high instance of people arriving by public transport and train, with only approximately 40 per cent of guests arriving by car," the report said.
