A TEENAGER is celebrating his first motor racing success, in his father's 1960s Formula Three car.

Edwin Jowsey, of Aislaby, near Whitby, North Yorkshire, has been driving quad bikes around his farm home since he was two years old, and has developed a love of motor sports.

Edwin turned 16 at the beginning of last month.

Although he will not be able to drive on the roads for another year, he has begun his racing career by driving his father, Cliff's, single-seater Grand Prix Formula Three car, in a race.

As a newcomer, he started from the back of the grid, but crept up among the other cars to finish in fifth place.

Last weekend, he was at Cadwell Park, in Lincolnshire, and won a race - to the surprise of fellow racers and onlookers who knew nothing about him.

Edwin, who attends Whitehall School, at Fylingdales, near Whitby, is interested in science and technology, but does not know yet whether his future career will be in motor racing.

Mr Jowsey has 11 cars on his farm and says his son has inherited his passion for speed.

Mr Jowsey takes part in historic car racing and Edwin has been his right-hand man.

"He has an understanding of them and he has been coming as my mechanic for the last three or four years," he said.

A spokesman for the Motor Sports Association said Edwin was "unusually young" to be taking part in historic racing because its usual followers were people who could remember the glory days of Jackie Stewart - long before Edwin was even born.
