A SCHEME to provide a sports pitch in Lazenby has been given the go-ahead, despite residents' objections.

The villagers are united in calling for the facility, but split over its location.

On Monday planners from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council visited the park, on the High Street, which has been put forward as the location for the multi-sports ball pitch.

They were met by a large crowd of villagers and local children, many carrying banners showing their support or opposition for the facility.

The scheme is being proposed by Lazenby Leisure Group, a community partnership aimed at improving facilities in the village.

Peter Jones, from the borough council, represented the group, explaining that children have to play football on the High Street, using bus shelters as goal posts.

Objector Winifred Walker countered: "It is too much to put on householders - our quality of life will deteriorate. There is no such thing as a quiet football pitch."

Brian Jackson, speaking for the residents in favour of the pitch, said: "This is the best chance the village has to get something positive done."

After approving the scheme, Coun Helen McLuckie, chairman of the planning committee, praised the excellent turn out of villagers. "This is one way where children can play safely in the area they live," she said.
