The Division Three rivals don their cricket white and meet at Park Drive as part of the benefit year of Durham bowler Simon Brown.

Newcastle and England legend Peter Beardsley - who ended his glittering playing career at Victoria Park - is in line for a place in the Pool side, along with Century FM's Paul Gough.

Opposing managers Chris Turner and Gary Bennett have promised to send their first-team squads for the game which starts at 5.45pm.

Brown, currently struggling with a knee injury, has claimed over 500 wickets since Durham's entered the County Championship in 1992 - making him their most prolific wicket-taker.

Brown, who made one England appearance against Pakistan in 1996 said: "I know how big the rivalry is between Hartlepool and Darlington and whether it's football or cricket they'll be desperate to win.

"We wanted to do something for the cricket fans in the south of the county and I can't thank the clubs enough for taking time out from their pre-season programmes to help my benefit year.''

Darlington will probably field the majority of their first team squad.

Bennett, who could take part at some stage, said: "Some of the lads are very keen to take part in the game, especially those who like local derbies!

"Quite a few want to play, but I think we might have to arrange some net practice early on."

It is thought that one Darlington player achieved a good standard of cricket, and he may be the team's secret weapon tonight.

Pool defender Mark Robinson is an accomplished cricketer and boss Chris Turner said: "It should be a good occasion. I used to play a bit of cricket regularly, but haven't picked up a bat for years.

"I think we are all looking forward to it and hopefully the fans will come along and support Simon's benefit.''
