A FAMILY have praised firefighters who saved their treasured elderly horse from an almost certain death when they helped it back on to its feet.

Brandysnap, 25, which has won numerous showjumping competitions, had collapsed in a field.

Pauline Griggs, of Satley, near Lanchester, County Durham, said: "When I saw her lying on the ground this morning I thought she was dead.

"She was injured ten days ago and had developed a leg infection. The vet was due to arrive later in the afternoon, but I knew if she had stayed down she would have died.

"I thought if we could get her up she would stand a chance, and I thought of the fire brigade.

"If you don't ask . . . you'll never know. They were here within minutes. And they have been absolutely wonderful.

"Considering all the pressures they are under when they do something like this it is most appreciated."

Mrs Griggs said Brandysnap was part of the family.

"We have had her since she was five years old. My son, Martin, showjumped with her from the age of ten, as did my daughter, Sarah," she said.

Three appliances from Durham and Darlington Fire Brigade attended the scene.

Sub Officer Neil Hartley said: "We have the specialist equipment for animal rescues and with the help of a forklift were able to lift her."

A relieved daughter Sarah said after the rescue: "She is doing fine. The vet has now come and given her two injections.

"But we will not be leaving her alone. We will be taking turns in shifts to make sure that she does not go down again."
