CELEBRATIONS to mark the Queen's golden jubilee could stretch across several weeks in Richmond.

Programmes for both the annual Richmond Meet, traditionally held in May, and the new Richmond Festival, which saw its debut this summer, could incorporate events to mark the historic milestone.

One idea discussed by the town council is a pageant tracing the town's history.

Deputy mayor, Councillor Stuart Parsons, told a meeting on Monday night that the ambitious proposals would require a substantial army of volunteers, as well as funding from outside agencies, such as Yorkshire Forward. Councillor Oliver Blease also suggested a permanent memorial.

Floodlighting of the Grey Friars Tower or a water feature such as a fountain are also possible future options.
