SPECIAL services for people needing urgent dental treatment in North Yorkshire came on stream yesterday.

Pilot schemes have been set up across the county for people suffering severe toothache or other serious dental problems who are not registered with a dentist.

The North Yorkshire Health Authority has set up the service within four weeks of receiving the funding for it.

The director of primary care, Dr Gavin McBurnie, said: "Staff have done remarkably well to recruit dentists and put the necessary arrangements into place."

The authority is using the NHS Direct service to direct patients to the various dental practices taking part to avoid having to publicise a range of telephone numbers.

Anyone needing urgent treatment should call NHS Direct 0845 4647 and will be put in touch with the service covering their area
