POLICE in the North-East have launched a month-long crackdown on drink-drivers.
The County Durham, Northumbria and Cleveland forces are targeting drivers who drink at barbecues and country pubs.
Superintendent Barry Peart, Durham Constabulary's head of traffic, said: "I believe we have the full backing of the public for this campaign and, more widely, for drink-driving enforcement and education."
Northumbria Police assistant chief constable John Scott said: "People find it particularly tempting when they are out on hot summer days to stop off at a pub for a few drinks.
"We are also well into the Sunday afternoon barbecue season, when again there is the temptation to drink. Our message is simple: If you drink, don't drive."
Acting Superintendent Mick Bennett, of Cleveland Police, said: "We will be targeting premises as well as individuals in our determination to rid the roads of these persistent offenders.
