GLORIOUS Goodwood saw Zuhair take the spoils for a magnificent third year running in the Charlton Stakes over the minimum trip on Wednesday.

Sent down from Sessay for a repeat bid by David Nicholls, he was well ridden by wife Alex Greaves.

Zuhair has won five times from 11 runs at the course and bids today to repeat his double of two years ago by landing the Stewards Cup consolation race again. However, when trying the double last year, he was only fifth .

Stable-mate Flak Jacket was in the money in fourth behind him on Wednesday and Nicholls was also in the money in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes at Ascot's Sunday meeting, when Atlantic Viking was a close-up fourth.

Anthony Mon Amour won for him at Newcastle and, on Wednesday evening, Kempton saw Al Muallim win under Kieren Fallon.

Mark Johnston also had Goodwood success, Mister Cosmi winning under Kevin Darley on Tuesday. The Middleham trainer was very open about two-year-old Leo's Luckyman, whom he expected to win the Champagne Lanson Vintage Stakes on Wednesday, but the youngster was only third to disappoint.

Tomasino was also third in the Tote Gold Trophy for the Kingsley House crew.

Johnston had fared better at Ascot earlier in the week, as Far Pavilions, owned by David Abell, won. Newmarket's Sunday fare included a win from Abluhera, while Yarmouth and Thirsk also saw winners for the yard.

Ascot's best result for the north was when amateur rider Carol Williams partnered Nigel Tinkler's Cryfield to win for the trainer, earning herself a diamond necklace into the bargain.

Goodwood nearly saw Alan Swinbank on the winner's mark, as Gracilis was beaten in the marathon Goodwood Stakes over two miles and five furlongs. However, the Melsonby trainer was in better form taking a double.
