COUNCILLORS have agreed to donate £10,000 towards a long-running campaign to repair a bridge.
The condition of the 136-year-old Myton Bridge, which spans the River Swale near Helperby, near Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire, has deteriorated rapidly in recent years, with sections of the cast iron balustrade falling into the river.
The bridge was closed to the public in December 1998 because of its poor condition and a local group was set up to ensure its repair and reopening.
The Friends of Myton Bridge are close to achieving their target of about £326,000 - and have been given a further boost by Hambleton District Council's award.
Cabinet spokesman for planning, Councillor Denis Howey, said: "We are keen to work in partnership with local people and other agencies to preserve this important feature."
The bridge provides a footpath and bridleway from Myton village to the west bank of the river and gives access to the site of the White Battle, which occurred in 1319, and is registered as a battlefield by English Heritage.
