AN elderly woman, involved in a crash in North Yorkshire on Thursday, died in hospital yesterday.

She is thought to be from Teesside, but police were not confirming her identity until relatives had been informed. An inquest is expected to open on Tuesday.

Two passengers in her Fiat, which was involved in a collision on the A170, between Scarborough and Pickering, also needed hospital treatment.

A man and two children in the other vehicle escaped with cuts and bruises.

Meanwhile, Hilda Stead, 75, of Redcar, was described as "poorly" in Middlesbrough General Hospital after an accident on the North York Moors minutes later.

Ms Stead was a passenger in a Fiat Panda, involved in a collision with a VW Golf, which was being driven by a Dutch tourist on the B1257, between Stokesley and Helmsley, at about 1.40pm, on Thursday.

Police are hoping to trace a cream or yellow box van, the driver of which they believe could be an important witness.

He or she can report to any police station, or telephone (01609) 783131.
