COUPLES are being encouraged to marry at the headquarters of the North-East's biggest local authority.

County Hall, in Durham City, was licensed to hold civil weddings 18 months ago, but is still waiting for the first couple to cross the threshold.

There have been a few inquiries, but no one has opted for a civil ceremony in the building.

David Dixon, the council's public services manager, said: "We thought we'd broken the duck the other day when someone made what seemed like a keen inquiry, but they haven't been back to me.

"County Hall may not immediately spring to mind for couples embarking on wedded life, but we can offer the complete wedding package.

"We have excellent facilities and can accommodate up to 250 guests.

"The room has recently been refurbished, while the high-ceiling splendour of the Durham Room will serve equally well for the wedding and reception."

In addition to four register offices in the county, County Hall is one of 24 premises approved for marriage, including the Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle, and Beamish Hall.
