A YOUTH organisation is planning to buy an outdoor education centre to provide youngsters with a challenging break.

The Darlington Outdoor Pursuits Club, part of the Darlington and District Youth and Community Association (DDYCA), wants to open a centre in Teesdale, County Durham, for its members as well as young people across the country.

A building has been identified near High Force, and the club is trying to raise the £250,000 price. It is hoping Darlington Borough Council will provide a £60,000 loan to help with the purchase and to buy equipment.

A council spokesman said: "A residential and field studies centre can offer multi-activity programmes.

"It is not seen purely as an outdoor activity centre as that would preclude many other valuable and exciting learning opportunities."

Teesdale was chosen because of its natural beauty and local attractions, such as the Nenthead Mining Museum.

It is hoped the 25-bed centre and 20-bed annex would be used by schools, community groups, training organisations, and for holidays for those with special needs.

The DDYCA already has £170,00 and expects to raise another £30,000 in three months.

If the council agrees to the loan, the extra money would be used for equipment and security.
