A SUMMER drink-drive campaign mounted by three North-East police forces at the beginning of the month has resulted in the testing of more than 5,000 motorists in two weeks.

The month-long campaign was launched on August 1 by the Northumbria, Durham and Cleveland forces.

The crackdown is led by specialists from the traffic departments of the three forces, who have established that accidents involving alcohol are more likely to occur at this time of the year than during the Christmas period.

During the first two weeks of the campaign, a total of 5,367 breath tests were carried out. The result is that 138 drivers will be prosecuted after giving a positive test or for refusing to give a breath sample.
