TWO groups in Bedale have got together to put on the biggest firework display the town has ever seen.
The community bonfire committee and the Bedale 750 steering group have agreed to pool their resources to put on a firework spectacular and bonfire on Saturday, November 3, at 6.30. It will mark Guy Fawkes night and signal the end of the long-running Bedale 750 market charter festivities.
The display, organised by the bonfire committee, will last about 25 minutes as usual - but the fireworks will be bigger and much more spectacular. There will be 15 sequences, all set to music and, to ensure greater precision, they will be fired electronically by a professional team.
"We understood Bedale 750 was planning to end the celebrations with a firework display at the end of September" said Coun John Noone, chairman of the bonfire committee and deputy mayor, "We were able to persuade members that one really big firework spectacular in November would be better than two medium-sized ones".
Coun John Weighell, chairman of Bedale 750 and mayor of Bedale, said: "We agreed to hold off until November, even though it meant prolonging the time span of our celebrations, which started in May. It means the town will have a display to remember and we can really go out with a bang".
Both groups have put in similar contributions to produce the display. One of the tableaux will be a 15ft long "Bedale 750" sign in fireworks. As it dies away, it will mark the end of the Bedale 750 celebrations - more than 40 events celebrating the 750th anniversary of the Bedale market charter, awarded to the town in 1251 by Henry III.
