MARKS and Spencer celebrated a century of shopping in Stockton this week.

Entertainment and a visit from Coronation Street's two-timing doctor Matt Ramsden, alias actor Stephen Beckett, were among the attractions.

He stepped in at the last minute to replace fellow Street star Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) who was busy with filming commitments.

Dr Matt, who was in Stockton yesterday to open the new Wellington Square shopping complex, dropped into the High Street store to chat to staff and customers.

Four days of fun started on Wednesday as the store's longest-serving employee cut a special birthday cake.

Mrs Jackie Popple began work with M&S at the age of 15 and has completed 33 years service, taking a few years out to raise her family.

Mrs Popple, who is 55 and lives in Yarm, has worked on most sections, including food, textiles and display, and was part of the team which saw through decimalisation.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed it," she said. "When I started I never intended to stay this long. I was just giving it a try, but it was too good to leave."

Mrs Popple says the store is emerging from much of the gloom which has plagued the chain this year.

"We are pulling our socks up and we are getting there," she said. "The new ranges are really good and morale is fine."

The business has changed almost beyond recognition since Mrs Popple began work. When she started, staff cut slices of cake in-store and weighed out biscuits. And the old uniforms, all on display in the store, can't compete with the smart new outfits staff wear now.

General merchandising manager Mandy Storey said business was improving across the board. "This is the most positive we have ever been," she said. "Everyone is keyed up for the celebrations and there is a wonderful atmosphere."

The present site is the store's third address in Stockton. The original branch opened in Bishop street in 1901, closing in 1907 and reopening in Victoria Buildings in 1927. The business moved to 145/6 High Street in 1927 and to 139 in 1938. The original 9,000sq ft of retail space is now 18,100sq ft.

The celebrations include activities for children, staff dressed in fancy dress to spotlight changes in the store uniform over the years, fashion shows, wine-tasting, children's choir and drama sketches.

The events continue up to tomorrow.
