COUNCILLORS worried about vandalism have delayed a decision on whether to spend £15,700 on refurbishing public toilets at Stokesley.

Health officers are to take another report to the Hambleton council cabinet after concern was expressed about some of the materials to be used in the refurbishment, planned after public consultations showed that there was a need for high quality public conveniences.

A report setting out standards which all refurbishments should meet, to comply with public expectations and government criteria, sought additional funding from the cabinet for the Stokesley toilets.

The cost of building work had increased mainly because it was envisaged that there should be a baby changing room, vitreous china urinals instead of stainless steel, a service area and tiling of walls and floors incorporating pictures of local landmarks or places of interest.

Some cabinet members, however, said toilets must be kept as vandal-proof as possible and questioned the proposed use of vitreous china
