A HUGE order to supply products to Railtrack will safeguard work at two Corus plants in the UK.
But while the £100m-plus order will underpin jobs at Workington, where 100 jobs were cut in the past year, and Castleton, Manchester, the steel will be supplied by Corus on Teesside.
A spokesman said: "The supply of steel for the additional tonnage from Railtrack to Corus Rail in Workington will be produced at Corus Teesside. Although it does not impact on the overall steel outputs from Teesside, the order is a major achievement for Corus Group and in particular Corus Rail at Workington.''
The order will virtually double the amount of rail and rail welding services Corus supplies to Railtrack, for the remaining three and a half years of a five year contract.
"Winning this additional volume is a major achievement for Corus Rail and a testament to the excellence of our products," the spokesman said
