YOUNGSTERS in a County Durham village have their own youth club, thanks to some of their older friends.

Members of the Bowburn Youth Project, near Durham City, have set up youth club sessions for younger children. The sessions are aimed at eight to 11-year-olds and include art, craft and sports.

Durham County Council community education worker Paul Hebron said: "The youth club originally catered for 13 to 17-year-olds, but there were a lot of younger children wanting to get involved.

"In the end, the older ones decided to do something about it and so set up a session for the younger children, which they themselves run. It has proven to be a big success in the village."

Bowburn Youth Project is supported by Durham County Council's Community Education Department, which provides two part time youth workers.

Members of the senior club took part in a summer residential course in the Lake District where activities included abseiling and rock climbing, as well as team building work and careers advice.
