A museum could be opened in Marske thanks to the donation of a Grade II listed building by a local man.

Jack Anderson died in May and bequeathed the 17th Century Winkies Castle, in the High Street, to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council with a collection of relics of Marske and the surrounding area's history, on the understanding it was turned into a museum. The castle is probably the oldest building in Marske and has a timber frame.

Mr Anderson filled it with a huge collection of items of local history and opened it to visitors on an irregular basis.

At the council's executive meeting on Tuesday, it was decided to accept Mr Anderson's offer and maintain the castle as a museum.
