TWO visitor attractions in the region will reopen today following the lifting of blue box foot-and-mouth restrictions.

Staff at Allen Banks, at Haydon Bridge, and the historic Houseteads Roman Fort, on Hadrian's Wall, have been busy preparing the attractions in time for today's visitors.

Footpaths around the fort and along the wall to Steel Rigg will remain closed.

But the news has pleased National Trust area manager David Walters.

He said: "We are delighted to announce the reopening of Allen Banks and Housesteads Fort.

"The opening is good news for visitors and gives a much needed boost to tourism at the end of what has been an extremely difficult year for the trust, local businesses and farmers alike."

English Heritage sites in Northumberland which are open to the public are Berwick Barracks, Lindisfarne Priory, Dunstanburgh Castle, Warkworth Castle, Belsay Hall and Gardens, Tynemouth Priory, Chesters Fort and Corbridge Roman Site.

Barnard Castle, in County Durham, is also open.
