FAIRLESS Engineering has experienced the best six months of business in its 82-year history.

The company has seen output rise by 30 per cent on last year, and has an order book of £100,000, with more to come.

Fairless specialises in manufacturing cable connecting equipment and supplies the Ministry of Defence and shipbuilders such as Vosper Thornycroft and BAE Systems.

It attributes its success to being a member of Northern Defence Industries (NDI), a cluster of 85 manufacturing companies in the region.

NDI chief executive David Bowles, said: "Fairless is actively involved in collaborating to promote the capabilities of the membership and to secure business for the region.

"Its success is a good example of how active involvement in a high value engineering cluster can directly benefit the bottom line."

John Robson, technical director of Fairless, also chairs NDI's marine sector group.

He said: "Being a member of NDI has opened up potential markets that I as an individual might not have been able to identify."
