A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl who fell 20ft from a bedroom window died from a fractured skull, a post-mortem examination has confirmed.

Lyndsey Churlish fell to her death from the window of her home in Trimdon Station, County Durham, on Tuesday evening.

She had been playing in a back bedroom with her brother, sister and a friend, while her mother Suzanne was downstairs chatting to a neighbour.

Lyndsey was rushed to the University Hospital of Hartlepool, but doctors were unable to save her.

Specially-trained detectives have interviewed the children involved and the investigations are now complete. They again stressed Lyndsey's death was not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman for Durham Police said: "The police investigation has now concluded and the file is being prepared for the Durham coroner."

The incident has prompted Rospa to renew its call for safety devices to be fitted on windows in all new homes.

A spokesman said: "We hear of these tragedies each year. It's difficult to say exactly how many children fall from windows and fortunately not all are killed.

"In the long-term, we would be looking for restrictors on windows in new houses to limit how far they can open.

"Also we would ask parents to think when they plan children's bedrooms as to where furniture is so, for instance, you should not put a chair or a bed under a window which children could climb on.

"Sadly, you have to think of the worst that could happen."
