PRAISE for Pop Idol hopeful Zoe Birkett has continued to pour into The Northern Echo as she prepares to make it into the competition's next stage tomorrow night.

The 16-year-old, from Darlington, is a strong contender in the ITV contest. Last weekend's show saw judge and pop mogul Pete Waterman tell her: "Darlington should be very proud of you."

Judging by the response to our We're Backing Zoe campaign, the town is right behind her.

Last night, James O'Neill, headteacher at Carmel RC Technology College, where she studies, said: "She's a very good ambassador for the college.

"She works hard in school at her subjects and is keen to do well, not only in her public performances but also in her academic work."

Zoe, who will sing a Christmas song on tomorrow's show, has taken part in every school production since the age of 11, and has regularly sung solo performances for the college, said Mr O'Neill.

Readers have continued to give Zoe their messages of support.

Constance Kidd, of Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, said: "She's very good. I think she's got a good future - she's got the figure, she's got the voice and the personality.

"I think she has got a tremendous presence and confidence - I think she will do well."

Messages of support for Zoe can be phoned into The Northern Echo on (01325) 505071, and readers are urged to vote for her on Saturday.
