A TRIP to the local has become more than a pint and a game of dominoes for regulars at a Newton Aycliffe pub.

A computer course run at the Aycliffe Arms, in Silverdale Place, has proved such a success that it is to be extended.

It all started when landlord Dean Young decided it was time he learned how to use the family computer.

He inquired about courses available at the town's Learning Shop, in the Thames Centre, and was asked if he would consider running a course at his pub.

Mr Young put up posters and was surprised at the interest they generated. As a result, the basic course ran for 12 weeks every Monday night in the lounge.

Mr Young said: "I had a PC from two years ago which we got for the kids for Christmas, but the instructions might as well have been written in Chinese. I didn't even know how to turn it on.

"But because we've done this course, it's helped me out a lot. I run off posters for the pub now for forthcoming attractions and things like that."

The course generated so much interest amongst regulars that Mr Young is aiming to run other courses.
