ORGANISERS of events in Teesdale have benefited from the first wave of cash paid out under a new grant scheme, with more still available.

Teesdale Marketing, formed three years ago to promote the dale and encourage economic prosperity, has already paid out £7,500 to help ten local events go ahead next year, in an initial funding announcement to coincide with the festive season.

The events, which include a Queen's jubilee concert at the Bowes museum, the official opening of the Mickleton footbridge, tea at a Victorian village market in Staindrop and a scouts bonfire display at Startforth, have benefited from the events support grant, up to a maximum of £1,000 each or half the cost, whichever is the smaller figure.

Mr Bill Oldfield, chairman of Teesdale Marketing, said the initiative was designed to help the recovery of the local economy, re-establish community spirit and offer hope for the future following the foot-and-mouth epidemic.

"We are delighted that such a diverse range of activities is planned within the dale for 2002," said Mr Oldfield. "Our ability to support events in this way is dependent on the funding we have been able to attract from One North-East, the County Durham Foundation and Teesdale District Council."

Mr Oldfield was keen to stress that money was still in the pot for any other organisation arranging a public event in the dale next year. The closing date for applications is February 15.

"Although grants are awarded on a first come, first served basis, we still have funds available to support Teesdale events and activities next year and welcome new applications," he added.
