LESSONS were magic for pupils of two Wensleydale primary schools who had the chance to learn the tricks of the trade from a master.

International magician Mr Johnny Hay performed a special show for more than 100 youngsters from West Burton and Askrigg schools at Askrigg on Tuesday.

It was followed by workshops during which the children had the chance to try out some magic tricks for themselves.

Mr Hay performed a 40-minute show during which he amazed the youngsters with card tricks, moving objects and even sawing a child in half. He then gave away the secrets behind a few of the simpler tricks in two workshops for children aged seven to 11.

Mr Matt Blyton, head teacher at West Burton, said: "It was very enjoyable for the children. He showed them how he made cups, balls and coins move and disappear and he let them try out some of the tricks for themselves.

"However, he kept secret the more complicated tricks like sawing someone in half.

"It was a nice afternoon, particularly as it strengthened the links between two of the smaller dales schools.
