THE Government has rejected claims that it is dragging its feet over compensation for sick miners.
It accused opponents who have criticised the speed of its procedures of telling "half-truths and lies".
Energy Minister Brian Wilson admitted yesterday that progress had been "painfully slow" at times, but blamed hold-ups in processing claims on legal complexities.
He said the Government was committed to delivering justice for the miners.
"We are making significant progress. Across Britain, we are paying out almost £1.5m every day in compensation.
"Nearly £700m has been paid out so far and the Government has set aside the money needed to meet the compensation due in full.
"At times progress has appeared painfully slow, but we have to adhere to the legal and medical process that the courts have ruled must be followed in every case."
Compensation campaigner Pat Daglish, of Stanley, County Durham, said she "partly agrees" with the critics.
"I can't see why the Government can't take on staff, instead of letting it drag on for so long. I am not saying they're doing nothing, they are just not doing it quickly enough."
