Spennymoor's failure to hold on to a three goal lead against Gretna in midweek cost them a place in the Presidents Cup quarter-finals.

Moors were looking good for a financially rewarding away trip to Barrow on Saturday, but poor defending allowed Gretna to pull back two late goals and force a 4-4 draw.

Instead, they will now play Hucknall at home in the Chairman's Cup, and Gateshead, as runners up in the group, will go to Barrow instead.

Bishop Auckland are knocked out of the competition altogether, and will be without a league game tomorrow.

Bishops full back Anthony Lee admitted that he could have upset his father Tony if he'd scored the winner for bishops against Spennymoor in their UniBond League Cup tie last week.

Anthony popped up with a powerful header right at the end of the 1-1 draw, but Spennymoor keeper Jim Provett pulled off a superb save to deny him - and ensure that Moors, managed by Tony, picked up a point in their group game.

"It was a strange feeling playing against my dad," he said.

"I think if the ball had gone in, he might not have let me back into the house!"

Meanwhile, Lee Senior is full of praise for keeper Provitt, and said: "Hartlepool came to watch him last week, and were very impressed.

"It wouldn't surprise me if they recall him, and put him on the bench for the first team."

Whitby might turn to a Libyan Under 21 international to help them boost their league position.

The seasiders have slipped alarmingly close to the bottom of the table after losing to Altrincham last weekend, and manager Harry Dunn could introduce Rayiab L Elmgaryef to the team.

Whitby have signed midfielder David Anderson from Chester-le-Street.

They will also be playing Scarborough in the North Riding Senior Cup on Tuesday at the Turnbull Ground.
