HUNDREDS of youngsters entered a logo competition for a Durham community's anniversary celebrations.

Belmont, on the outskirts of the city, is 150 this year and is holding a weekend of events at the start of February.

The committee which is organising the celebrations invited pupils at the area's eight schools to design a logo that can be used in publicity material. Hundreds of pupils from six schools put forward artwork and Antony Spinks, 11, of Belmont Comprehensive School, won with his design featuring local landmarks.

Sue Davie, secretary of the anniversary committee, said: "The response was excellent, of a really high standard and all of the children seemed keen.''

Antony and the eight runners-up received book vouchers and Antony was given a blown-up and framed reproduction of his logo.

Next Friday, a Gang Show-style musical evening will be held at Belmont Comprehensive School at 7pm.

On Saturday, February 2 a coffee morning will be held in Belmont Library at 10am and will feature an exhibition of old photographs of the parish.

On Sunday, February 3 a service of thanksgiving, led by the Bishop of Durham, the Right Reverend Michael Turnbull, will be held in St Mary Magdalene Church at 10am.
