THE owner of a traditional gipsy caravan which was destroyed in an arson attack is offering a cash reward to catch the culprits.

The man, who is not being named, has put up a £5,000 reward after the carriage and a touring caravan were burnt to the ground on Friday, May 31.

A police investigation was launched into the incident, which happened in Upsall Drive, Blackwell, Darlington, at about 9.30pm, but detectives have only limited information about the blaze.

An appeal for witnesses has so far failed to lead police to the arsonist.

The owner of the caravans, which were parked outside his house, hopes to gain fresh information with the offer of a reward.

The windows of his home and a nearby Transit van were also badly damaged by the intense heat of the fire.

Detectives said it was a very serious arson attack and that they were eager for people to come forward with more information.

Detective Constable Jo Slater, of Darlington police, said: "One male was seen running away from the scene.

"It was a very dangerous and serious arson attack. The caravans were completely burned out and the fire started to burn the doors and windows of the house.

"Potentially, it could have been more serious if people had been inside the house.

"The caravans were totally damaged and the windows and frames will need replacing, as they melted with the heat.

"The owner was quite upset. It is a very serious crime and he has no idea why someone has done this."

Firefighters were called out, but no one was hurt in the blaze.

Anyone who has any information about the incident is asked to contact Det Con Slater at Darlington police on (01325) 467681, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
