A NEW comedy has broken box office records at a North-East arts venue.

Good To Firm, a first-time effort by Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood, attracted almost 1,000 people to the Customs House at South Shields, including a 398-seat sell-out on Saturday night, the last of the four performances.

The play is set against a backdrop of the Grand National horse race.

Customs House director Ray Spencer, who played one of the four characters, said: "The response was absolutely fantastic. When I first read the script I knew it was a winner. To average 240 people at four drama performances is unprecedented at the Customs House.

"What is particularly pleasing is that the play was a first effort for the writers and the director, Dennis Jobling, who did a first-class job."

The writers have been approached by a London theatrical agency as well North East investors to take the play further.
