THE biggest event in the North-East aimed at encouraging youngsters to enjoy science has proved a big hit.

More than 3,000 pupils from 60 schools in the Tees Valley area have visited the Science is Great event, at Ormesby Sports Complex, Middlesbrough, this week.

They have taken part in activities - linked to the National Curriculum - including a ride on an inflatable planetarium and forensic dusting for fingerprints.

Phil Saint, from event sponsors learn2work, said: "This has been a fun-filled, thrilling week that has allowed the children to explore and learn about science and look at the great opportunities open to them.

"When most people think of a scientist they often conjure up a stereotypical image of a white-coated technician in a lab. We are showing pupils that science careers are extremely wide, varied and exciting."
