Craig White said thank-you for a £1,500 benefit collection on his home ground at Scarborough yesterday by turning in an electrifying all-round performance which brought Yorkshire their first home victory of the season in any competition.

White first rattled up 64 for Phoenix, his best score of the season, and then stunned Somerset Sabres with three wickets in one over as they slumped to 148 all out in a futile attempt to make 284.

The discarded England all-rounder went on to grab two further wickets to give himself career-best figures in a one-day match for Yorkshire of five for 19.

Somerset lost their last seven wickets for 36 and Yorkshire's win by 135 runs came with 18 overs to spare - the perfect preparation for tomorrow's Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy quarter-final match against Essex at Chelmsford.

A bumper crowd at North Marine Road basked in the sunshine as White and Matthew Wood got them off to a great start after winning the toss with an opening stand of 66 in ten overs before Wood was caught behind off Steffan Jones.

A familiar face then entered the attack as former Yorkshire and England paceman Paul Jarvis came on to bowl.

Jarvis, who officially retired as a Somerset player at the end of the 2000 season, answered an SOS call at his Bath home over the weekend when Graham Rose went down with a hamstring injury and Somerset had no-one else in reserve.

Jarvis was hastily registered and deservedly took two wickets in three balls when he came back for a second spell towards the end of the Yorkshire innings.

White eased off for a while as pinch-hitter Chris Silverwood blasted Jones for two sixes and a four in one over before sweeping Ian Blackwell to Peter Bowler at long leg and White had thumped nine fours and a six off 63 balls when Blackwell also had him caught on the boundary edge.

Yorkshire maintained their brisk tempo with Anthony McGrath completing his first limited overs half-century of the season but on 59 he became another of Jones' four victims.

Darren Lehmann, who had plundered 443 runs in his last four coloured clothing innings at Scarborough, was a relative failure this time with 32 while Michael Lumb and Gary Fellows also chipped in with useful contributions.

Silverwood soaked up most of the punishment as Bowler and Blackwell made a quickfire start for Somerset with 32 runs inside the first four overs, Blackwell taking four boundaries from one Silverwood over, but young Tim Bresnan remained mainly cool at the other end and quickly got rid of both openers.

Jarvis failed to score coming in at No 3 but Michael Burns and Keith Parsons put Somerset back in with a chance by knocking up 71 in 11 overs for the fourth wicket.

White ended the spree by bowling Burns for 49 with an off-cutter and later in the over he pinned Matt Wood lbw and had Piran Holloway caught behind with similar deliveries.

Parsons denied him the hat-trick but was soon bowled by another off-cutter from White who then knocked back Rob Turner's stumps as the collapse continued.

The crowd revelled in Yorkshire's resurgence but two spectators were injured during the course of the afternoon when struck on the head by six hits.

Yorkshire, who hope to finalise their squad for Chelmsford today, were still trying to contact Lord's last night to see if Darren Gough is both fit and available.
