AN OFF-DUTY policeman is fighting for his life after being repeatedly stabbed as he confronted youths gathered around a neighbour's car.

Pc David Myers, an officer with the Metropolitan Police, was visiting relatives in Hartlepool when he was attacked late last night.

He confronted up to five youths in Marlborough Street and suffered a number of stab wounds around his body which caused 'severe bleeding'.

Residents and police officers who were called in gave first aid as the 31-year-old lay on the ground before he was taken by ambulance to the town's University Hospital.

Pc Myers, based in Ilford, Essex, underwent surgery and was today said to be in a 'comfortable' condition.

Forensic experts recovered items at the scene but a Cleveland Police spokesman said it was too early to say if they were linked to the attack.

A senior officer with Cleveland Police today praised Pc Myers.

Detective Superintendent Steve Swales, head of Hartlepool CID, said: 'This was an appalling attack on a young man who was simply doing his duty.

'I understand that Pc Myers is awaiting transfer to the Cleveland Force.

"He demonstrated all that is good about our police service. He didn't leave his sense of duty behind him at the Met, but exercised it here in Hartlepool.

"His moral and physical courage have been outstanding.''

Police arrested four people aged between 16 and 21 who were being questioned today.
