A DECISION on whether to approve plans for a wind turbine at Langdon Beck Youth Hostel, in upper Teesdale, will be made after councillors have visited the site.

Trevor Watson, a planning officer at Teesdale District Council, had recommended approval, saying the proposal has been modified considerably from a previous application.

The application, by hostel manager Ewan Boyd, is for a turbine on a six-metre tower, with a blade radius of 1.75 metres.

The turbine, which would be in an area of outstanding natural beauty, would provide electricity for the hostel.

Councillor Ian Galletley, who said he found wind turbines ugly, said the original application had been rejected and later turned down on appeal.

Councillor William Salvin suggested a site visit, saying he found it difficult to visualise the scheme.

Mr Watson said he would not normally advocate a site visit, but in this case he thought members could benefit.

The site visit was agreed.
