THIEVES stole a substantial amount of cash from an elderly woman in Northallerton last Friday.

A man who had earlier attempted to trick his way into her home by posing as a water board official was among a group who broke in and stole money. Police warned residents to stay on their guard against bogus callers.

YOUNG FUN: The Stargazers Holiday Club for children of primary school age runs from next Tuesday to Friday at the village hall in Kirklington. LORRY BLAZE: Firefighters tackled a blazing Post Office lorry at the side of the A1 on Monday, at 7.15pm. The vehicle caught fire on the northbound carriageway.

PHONE MAST: A planning application has been received by Harrogate Borough Council from T-Mobile UK for a 15-metre telecommunications mast with associated equipment cabinet at York Gate Farm, Melmerby, near Ripon.

FLOWER FESTIVAL: A flower festival will be held in All Saints' Church, Great Ayton, from Saturday until next Thursday. The church and grounds will be open each day from 11am until 5pm.
