THE first public debate on issues affecting a city and its residents will be held next week.

After introducing the concept of state of the city debates in May, as part of Sunderland City Council's new constitution, its leader, Councillor Bob Symonds, has called the first one on Tuesday, September 3.

As the first in a series of annual open forums, the debate will aim to focus public attention on key issues and stimulate ideas and involvement.

A number of presentations by keynote speakers are planned to explain what is still left to do in Sunderland's regeneration and in improving the quality of life in the city.

They will be followed by an open debate.

Coun Symonds said: "We really hope this is going to be a popular event in the city's year. We're inviting representatives from a wide range of organisations who live and work in Sunderland to take part.

"We are also encouraging members of the public to come and join in to hear the debate first-hand and have their say."

The event will be held in the council chamber at Sunderland Civic Centre, being preceded by refreshments at 9am and starting with a welcome speech at 9.30am. It will finish with an hour-long open debate, starting at noon.

Members of the public are advised to arrive early to secure seats, which will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
