A BUS driver died when he crashed his car into a tree as he drove home after a night out at a local club, an inquest heard yesterday.

Victor Frederick Fletcher, 64, of William Street, Auckland Park, Bishop Auckland, had been with his son Graham Fletcher at Coundon Workingmen's Club.

The inquest, at Bishop Auckland Magistrates' Court, was told that they left shortly after closing time and each drove along the C192 towards Coundon Grange.

Graham Fletcher recalled seeing his father's white Vauxhall Senator ahead of him for most of the way, but lost sight of him after a tight bend. But when he got home he called his father's house and spoke to his sister, Kay, who said their father had not returned from the club.

He went back along the road and found his father's car had left the road and crashed into trees.

Mr Fletcher was certified dead at the scene.

PC Malcolm Thomas, a Durham police accident investigator said the car was in full working order.

Tests revealed Mr Fletcher had probably been driving at more than 57mph around the bend, at least 17mph faster than would have been recommended in dark and damp conditions.

Darlington and South Durham Coroner Colin Penna recorded a verdict of accidental death.
