THE search is under way for the stars of grass roots sport - the Local Heroes of 2002.

The most prestigious awards event in grass roots sport takes place for the third year running at Tall Trees Hotel, near Yarm, on November 14.

And Newcastle United star Craig Bellamy will be guest of honour to present the awards which are this year being powered by npower.

Who can forget last year's emotional awards night when 83-year-old Kip Watson won the main award for his vision in launching an over-40s football league in Sunderland in 1980?

This year's event promises to be just as exciting, with Century FM, Orange, Newcastle and Gateshead Initiative, Darlington Building Society and Dutton Forshaw Stockton all joining main sponsors npower in supporting the awards.

So who are the grass roots sport stars of 2002?

Who deserves to be placed on a pedestal in recognition of their commitment, passion, dedication, achievements, and sheer love of sport?

Even before today's launch, our telephone lines have been busy with nominations so the competition is certain to be fierce.

Paul "Goffy" Gough, of Century FM, will again join the Editor of The Northern Echo, Peter Barron, in compering the evening. Goffy said: "It was an unforgettable night last year and I can't wait for this year's event. As well as celebrating the achievements of the winners, we'll also be having lots of fun."

Craig Bellamy, last year's PFA Young Footballer of the Year, said: "I am honoured to be asked to take part in recognising the talent and commitment of those involved in grass roots sport in the region."

The evening will also feature a charity auction in aid of grass roots sport charities.

The nomination form can be found on the back page today, and further details will appear each week in Local Heroes.
