AN INQUEST jury has found the treatment at the hands of other prisoners led an inmate to take his own life.

A three-day inquest into the death of Adam Larder heard that the 21-year-old heroin addict was found hanged in a cell at Holme House Prison, Stockton, hours after being the target of abuse and taunts - including threats of violence - shouted from adjacent prison wings.

He had complained of being bullied by prisoner Daniel Thompson while at Doncaster Prison.

Thompson was issued with a formal warning, but both men were moved to the Teesside jail on the same prison bus.

Referring to a note Larder wrote before he hanged himself two days later, Teesside Coroner Michael Sheffield said: "He refers to being put on Rule 43 for his own protection. But it's got around that he has grassed on someone, that he thought it best to take his own life."

Thompson denied bullying Larder, who he said owed money for heroin, and had cited bullying as an excuse to get off the same wing.

The jury found unanimously that Larder killed himself.
