MOTORISTS are being warned of road lay-out changes as the next stage of improvements on a town centre bypass begin tomorrow.

The scheme to refurbishthe A167 in Chester-le-Street, between Ropery Lane roundabout and the A1(M) Blind Lane interchange, began on September 2.

Contractors should finish work on the northbound stretch of the A167, on Park Road Central, tonight.

That will allow them to reopen the northbound carriageway following repairs to Roman Avenue footbridge and Chester Burn Bridge, and resurfacing between Ropery Lane and Picktree Lane roundabouts.

Work will then switch to the southbound carriageway, with the contraflow system to be changed overnight tonight.

Users of this section of the A167 are therefore urged to show extra caution, and to be aware of the change in the traffic management lay-out from tomorrow.

The new contraflow is expected to be in place for about four weeks.

Highways Agency officials thanked motorists affected by the project for heeding advice and warnings so far, and for seeking alternative routes, wherever possible.

An agency spokesman said: "It has reduced delays, ensuring they are kept to a minimum, and has enabled the works to be carried out safely and efficiently."
