POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a teenage gunman opened fire on a van driver.

The incident happened shortly after 7.30am on Friday, on the Newton Cap Viaduct in Bishop Auckland.

The bullet from the air rifle shattered the windscreen and sent the Fiat van into the path of an oncoming blue Rover car, which narrowly managed to avoid a collision.

The victim and the driver of a light green metallic VW Golf car, who was behind the van, both got out and chased the gunman, aged between 14 and 17, who escaped into woodland.

Police would like any witnesses to come forward, especially the drivers of both cars.

The teenager, described as having striking short ginger hair, is of thin build and about 5'8 to 5'10 tall. He was wearing an oversized army-style camouflage jacket.
