Film producer and director Sir Anthony Havelock-Allan has died aged 98.

Sir Anthony, who was born at Blackwell Manor, Darlington, was the founder member of the Cineguild film company.

He was producer or executive producer on films including Happy Breed, Blithe Spirit, Brief Encounter and Great Expectations and received two Oscar nominations as co-screenwriter. His last film was Ryan's Daughter in 1970.

Sir Anthony left Darlington for the South at the age of eight but the North-East always remained dear to him. Following his retirement from film-making, he became a member of the judging panel for the Oscars.

Sir Anthony, who was married to actress Valerie Hobson for 13 years, died on Saturday.
